On July 8, 2024, Maryland Matters published an article by Josh Kurtz about the new book Mathias of Maryland: Remembering a Lincoln Republican in the Senate, edited by Fred Hill and Monica Healy. Mathias of Maryland is a collection of essays written by politicians and historians who worked with and knew Senator Mathias.
The book also examines the election that brought Mathias to the United States Senate — the 1968 Maryland U.S. Senate race where incumbent Senator Daniel Baugh Brewster lost to then Congressman Charles “Mac” Mathias.
The article also discusses John W. Frece’s critically acclaimed biography of Senator Danny Brewster:
Read together, the Brewster book and the Mathias book are excellent tutorials on Maryland politics and policy over the last half of the 20th century.
